Independent Investigation Ordered into NHS

Professor Lord Darzi Appointed to Establish the State of the Nation’s Health Service

In a significant move aimed at revitalising the National Health Service (NHS), Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting has ordered a comprehensive and independent investigation into the current state of the NHS. The investigation seeks to uncover the full extent of the issues plaguing the nation’s health service.

A Raw and Honest Assessment

Streeting has emphasised the need for a “raw and honest” assessment that will confront the hard truths about the NHS. To lead this crucial evaluation, he has appointed Rt Hon Professor Lord Darzi, OM, KBE. Lord Darzi is a lifelong surgeon, innovator, independent peer, and former health minister. The assessment is set to be delivered by September 2024.

“The government will be honest about the challenges facing the health service and serious about tackling them,” Streeting stated. “This investigation will uncover hard truths and I’ve asked for nothing to be held back. I trust Lord Darzi will leave no stone unturned and have told him to speak truth to power.”

Road to Recovery

The findings from this investigation will lay the foundation for the government’s 10-year plan to radically reform the NHS. The aim is to build a health service that is robust, future-proof, and capable of meeting the demands of modern healthcare.

Reflecting on his new role, Professor Lord Darzi remarked, “As every clinician and every patient knows, the first step to addressing any health problem is a proper diagnosis. My work will analyse the evidence to understand where we are today – and how we got to here – so that the health service can move forward. This is an important step to re-establishing quality of care as the organising principle of the NHS.”

Support from NHS Leadership

Amanda Pritchard, NHS Chief Executive, acknowledged the critical timing and importance of this investigation. “Frontline NHS staff are doing an incredible job, despite the huge pressures they face, to deliver care to over a million people every day,” she said. “But we know that they face huge struggles and patients are not always getting the timely, high-quality care they need. This comprehensive analysis will be an important step in helping us to build an NHS fit for the future.”

Government’s Broader Commitment

Wes Streeting’s commitment to fixing the NHS is further evidenced by his recent engagements with key figures across the health service. He has held meetings with junior doctors to discuss ending strikes and talks with the British Dental Association about revitalising NHS dentistry. A visit to a GP surgery in north London highlighted the importance of delivering a patient-led service providing continuity of care.

Additionally, Streeting outlined his broader commitment to support the government’s growth mission by improving the nation’s health. This plan hinges on three key steps:

  1. Cutting waiting times to get people back to work.
  2. Positioning the UK as a life sciences and medical technology superpower.
  3. Creating training and job opportunities through the NHS to stimulate growth across the country.

This independent investigation, under the stewardship of Professor Lord Darzi, marks a pivotal step towards diagnosing the NHS’s current challenges and crafting a roadmap for its future recovery and success.
